Bonbon

Jan-Tschichold Award 2017 

Organised by the FOC since 1997, the Jan Tschichold Award recognises outstanding achievements in book design by an individual, group or institution. It is bestowed independently of the competition. This year's award, which is endowed with CHF 15,000, goes to the group Bonbon Valeria Bonin (*1978) and Diego Bontognali (*1977).

Valeria Bonin *1978, Zürich
After studying visual design at the HGK Zurich (1997–2002, now the ZHdK), Valeria Bonin set up Bonbon together with Diego Bontognali in 2003. Since 2003 she has taught at various schools, including currently the F+F Schule für Kunst und Design, Zurich and the Schule für Gestaltung in St.Gallen, where she teaches the specialist course in graphic design. Valeria was a member of the “Best Book Design from all over the World” jury in 2015; she assesses and supervises dissertations, BA and MA diplomas at various educational establishments. Valeria Bonin has two children.

Diego Bontognali *1977, Genf
After attending school in Geneva and studying visual design at the HGK Zurich (1997–2002, now the ZHdK), Diego spent a season working in visual communication at the Schauspielhaus Zurich with Alex Trüb. He set up Bonbon together with Valeria Bonin in 2003. Diego has taught at ECAL in Lausanne since 2008 and the HSLU in Lucerne since 2011. He assesses and supervises BA dissertations at various schools.

Bonbon has received awards in a number of competitions, including the Best Book Design from all over the World (Golden Letter, 2014), the Most Beautiful Swiss Books (2016, 2013, 2009, 2003), the Federal Design Award (2010, 2003) and the Swiss Poster Award. Bonbon lectures and organises workshops in Switzerland and abroad.
