#INGRID

A jam-packed photo book containing more than 80 highgloss loose-leaf sheets eloquently translates online political activism into the medium of the book. The more than 300 colour photographs, each of which fills one page, were uploaded under the hashtag #Ingrid in order to drive internet traffic away from photographs released by the Mexican police showing the body of Ingrid E.V. following her femicide. Kitsch scenes of nature and sunsets are the dominant motifs, while aesthetically the differing resolutions (often low) of the enlarged pictures make a strong impact. The pictures are entirely free of any text – there are also no page numbers, as the loose sheets can be ordered as the reader chooses. The radical, almost unwieldy design successfully converts to book form the flood of images that is typical of social media, with all the repetitions and disorderliness that come with it. A loose cover in silver mirror lamination contains the colophon on its inside, while a second white cover in a smaller format presents a brief explanatory text in three languages. The publication contributes to the ongoing dialogue about ‘poor images’ (Hito Steyerl) and is a forceful example of how books can respond to social crises.
