Jury report

Thermo family
Breathing new life into a long-established classic of Swiss product design is one of the biggest tasks and challenges a designer can face. Retaining what works while simultaneously incorporating novel elements takes real talent.
Product designers Thilo Alex Brunner and Jörg Mettler win a Swiss Design Award for the second time for their innovative concepts, which are often produced in collaboration with big names and well known brands.
They receive the accolade this year for their reinterpretations of the SIGG ‘Thermo’ bottle. The commission formed part of a brand repositioning that involved giving the product a new look and placing design and production in Swiss hands. The company had sold thermos flasks before, but they were neither manufactured nor designed in Switzerland.
The iconic screw top as well as the shape of the bottle shoulders typical of the brand were retained in the new series, but the bottles themselves were given a contemporary appearance, abandoning the somewhat narrower cap in favour of a less geometric form better suited to a hot drink container.
The duo successfully overcame the challenge of translating the insulating properties of a thermos flask into a clear and contemporary form while retaining the traditional features that distinguish the brand. BrunnerMettler have once again demonstrated their ability to balance the demands of a commission with their own aesthetic ambitions.
