Quirk85 is a remarkable typographic project that re-interprets East Asia’s underacknowledged post-war Modernist aesthetic through a contemporary tri-script typeface. Drawing from a 1978 Korean corporate design manual, logos and advertising imagery of the time, the work reflects on how Western Modernism was absorbed but also distorted and reimagined in East Asia. Through Hangul, Chinese and Latin, the typeface creates a distinct visual language echoing late-Modernist ideals. The designers demonstrate not only a nuanced approach in their type design, but also a deep understanding of cultural memory and visual heritage.
