Concentrated Visual World
Viewer's Digest is a five-part newspaper series based on photographs and images downloaded from the internet and manipulated.
Created by Erol Gemma and Nazareno Crea, each issue has a Latin headline in large letters on the front page. The series begins with LUX (light) and is dedicated to the history of photography, presenting an interpretation of the rapid development of the medium that has become so important today.
The second issue, with the title MORI, revolves around the ever-present issue of human vanity. It ends with the words 'Me, Myself and I'. QUEO (meaning 'I can') shows the development of technical, scientific and social inventions in an almost pyrotechnically dynamic presentation. Images of Dolly the cloned sheep, cars and technical constructions illustrate the human urge to achieve more, to go faster and further and to make things bigger and better. The DOCTA (teaching) issue critically examines the circulation, accessibility and exponential accumulation of information in the internet age. The series concludes with NOX (night / death), focusing on the notion of transformation into another state, from the material to the immaterial, and combining elements from all the previous issues. In Viewer's Digest, with its highly effective juxtaposition of potent, narrative images, these two graphic artists stimulate free interpretation and multiple associations. Erol Gemma and Nazareno Crea present a view of our contemporary visual world that is both concentrated and intense. Ambiguity, occasional exaggeration and historical references are used to convey and critically question the themes they addresses.
