Out of the ordinary
Capital letters, crude lettering combined with simple illustrations are the distinguishing features of the Stadttheater Bern's posters. The two-dimensional drawings and the posters, often printed in two colours only, have great visual power. Behind all this are the two graphic designers and illustrators Bastien Aubry and Dimitri Broquard of 'FLAG Aubry/Broquard'. It should be pointed out how independent the 20 posters submitted are, even though they were commissioned for the Stadttheater Bern. The posters are simple, direct, and drawn and written by hand. Bastien Aubry and Dimitri Broquard use felt-tips, Indian ink and pencil, and also collage techniques. The computer often comes into play only for fine-tuning at the end of the design process. The individual posters are experimental and independent, linked by the Stadtheater logo. And yet 'FLAG Aubry/Broquard' successfully create an unmistakable identity for the Stadttheater. Since 2004, Bastien Aubry and Dimitri Broquard have been designing other printed matter for the theatre, such as events calendars, programmes and the house magazine. Their style polarizes, and Dimitri Broquard says about this: 'People either love our work or hate it.'
Aubry and Broquard also design books. Their clients include established museums and publishing houses such as the Zurich Migros Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hatje Cantz Verlag in Germany. As well as this commissioned work they develop fonts and produce books of their own unpublished work. All this work is a little out of the ordinary.
