Out of the ordinary
Cap­i­tal let­ters, crude let­ter­ing com­bined with sim­ple il­lus­tra­tions are the dis­tin­guish­ing fea­tures of the Stadtthe­ater Bern's posters. The two-di­men­sional draw­ings and the posters, often printed in two colours only, have great vi­sual power. Be­hind all this are the two graphic de­sign­ers and il­lus­tra­tors Bastien Aubry and Dim­itri Bro­quard of 'FLAG Aubry/Bro­quard'. It should be pointed out how in­de­pen­dent the 20 posters sub­mit­ted are, even though they were com­mis­sioned for the Stadtthe­ater Bern. The posters are sim­ple, di­rect, and drawn and writ­ten by hand. Bastien Aubry and Dim­itri Bro­quard use felt-tips, In­dian ink and pen­cil, and also col­lage tech­niques. The com­puter often comes into play only for fine-tun­ing at the end of the de­sign process. The in­di­vid­ual posters are ex­per­i­men­tal and in­de­pen­dent, linked by the Stadthe­ater logo. And yet 'FLAG Aubry/Bro­quard' suc­cess­fully cre­ate an un­mis­tak­able iden­tity for the Stadtthe­ater. Since 2004, Bastien Aubry and Dim­itri Bro­quard have been de­sign­ing other printed mat­ter for the the­atre, such as events cal­en­dars, pro­grammes and the house mag­a­zine. Their style po­lar­izes, and Dim­itri Bro­quard says about this: 'Peo­ple ei­ther love our work or hate it.'
Aubry and Bro­quard also de­sign books. Their clients in­clude es­tab­lished mu­se­ums and pub­lish­ing houses such as the Zurich Mi­gros Mu­seum of Con­tem­po­rary Art and the Hatje Cantz Ver­lag in Ger­many. As well as this com­mis­sioned work they de­velop fonts and pro­duce books of their own un­pub­lished work. All this work is a lit­tle out of the or­di­nary.
