Jury report

Valeria Bonin and Diego Bontognali offered the jury the results of a piece of typographical research on world format posters. They repeat the 'classic' sentence (the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog) and use it to test newly invented typefaces for form and function. They generate these fonts using a whole variety of materials like sticky tapes or Bostik, or they opt for a cartographic sign language derived from the geographical outlines of countries. This lead among other things to the 'Africalphabet'. The analysis ends up in the form of a small, enchanting publication ('typografieren. Atlas+Revier'), a methodical examination of the boundaries of typography in alphabetical order from the points of view of 'technique', 'rule' and 'tool'. The insights gained are then located on the accompanying map. This work, submitted for final assessment in the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich, Visual Communication Department, appeals through its independent language and its playful and provocative treatment of material.
