Self-pub­lished by an artist and ty­pog­ra­pher, this vol­ume pre­sents, on pages loosely in­serted one in­side an­other, 198 pho­tographs of phys­i­cal in­juries caused by U.S. Army tor­ture. They are drawn from doc­u­men­ta­tion that was pub­lished on the De­fense De­part­ment web­site in Feb­ru­ary 2016 fol­low­ing a court de­ci­sion. Each photo has been roughly cut out to­gether with sec­tions of the sur­round­ing text, en­larged and re­pro­duced on a sin­gle sheet of coated paper. Laid in be­tween are colour plates each de­pict­ing a com­plete page of a doc­u­ment. The rig­or­ous ap­proach gives the de­sign a de­gree of ar­bi­trari­ness that is, how­ever, based on a clear strat­egy. The work of de­sign is re­stricted to the printed pub­li­ca­tion and the rudi­men­tary shap­ing of the dig­i­tal ma­te­r­ial into a phys­i­cal form, which in­vites a closer ex­am­i­na­tion that the ma­te­r­ial de­serves. This is a rad­i­cal ap­proach that dif­fers from most of the other books in the com­pe­ti­tion; one that at­tempts to com­pre­hend the do­main of the aes­thetic as some­thing em­i­nently po­lit­i­cal.
