Self-published by an artist and typographer, this volume presents, on pages loosely inserted one inside another, 198 photographs of physical injuries caused by U.S. Army torture. They are drawn from documentation that was published on the Defense Department website in February 2016 following a court decision. Each photo has been roughly cut out together with sections of the surrounding text, enlarged and reproduced on a single sheet of coated paper. Laid in between are colour plates each depicting a complete page of a document. The rigorous approach gives the design a degree of arbitrariness that is, however, based on a clear strategy. The work of design is restricted to the printed publication and the rudimentary shaping of the digital material into a physical form, which invites a closer examination that the material deserves. This is a radical approach that differs from most of the other books in the competition; one that attempts to comprehend the domain of the aesthetic as something eminently political.
