Impact Type is the result of Sophie Wietlisbach’s extensive research into the largely overlooked history of Swiss manufacturers of typewriter typefaces, including Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype, whose products were used by companies such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti and Triumph-Adler. Faced with the loss of many original archives, the project reconstructs this industrial and typographic history through meticulous investigative work, drawing on dispersed sources and even forensic analyses conducted in Zurich and Lausanne. Complementing the research, Wietlisbach digitally revived and designed two historical typefaces and utilised them to uncover an almost forgotten chapter of the Swiss typographic heritage.
