Jury report

Drawing on his decade-long exploration of the medium of painting, Markus Weggenmann presents two large-scale works in which he examines the possibility of translating space into surface and sculpture into painting. The canvases can be seen from far away, towering even over the wall of the exhibition space in a decisive gesture. Formally and stylistically, they are pared down for maximum impact. The motif – the elongated form of a head – is separated from the surrounding planes of colour by irregular, empty sections of canvas. Weggenmann deliberately ignores all sense of perspective and proportion, skilfully employing highly pigmented paint to create a fascinating sense of depth in his images.
