L’Art Brut de Jean Dubuffet, aux origines de la collection

To mark its 40th an­niver­sary, the Col­lec­tion de L'Art Brut Lau­sanne pre­sents a large-for­mat cat­a­logue trac­ing the his­tory of Jean Dubuf­fet's col­lec­tion from its ori­gins, to the do­na­tion and the in­sti­tu­tion's in­au­gu­ra­tion and on to the pre­sent day. The book's de­sign lan­guage, for all its his­tor­i­cal roots, ap­pears sur­pris­ingly con­tem­po­rary. Three image sec­tions pre­sent draw­ings, paint­ings and sculp­tures al­most as if in a mu­seum, mostly alone on a page against a white or black back­ground. The three cor­re­spond­ing text sec­tions with fur­ther il­lus­tra­tions are dom­i­nated by strong con­trasts cre­ated by large white spaces and a bold yet rel­a­tively small font. The es­says in two lan­guages are con­tained within a sym­met­ri­cal lay­out, each in a nar­row col­umn, with Eng­lish on the left and French on the right, while the foot­notes are added in a sec­ond, still nar­rower col­umn.
