About the year 2009
At the competition 'The Most Beautiful Swiss Books' of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, the independent jury chose a total of thirty books as the most beautiful Swiss books of 2009. Subsequently, the awarded books were entered in the international competition of the Stiftung Buchkunst in Leipzig, Germany, where they were appraised by an international jury. A total of four Swiss books were ranked among the most beautiful: The gold medal for 'Thomas Galler. Walking through Baghdad with a Buster Keaton Face (edition fink), a silver medal for 'Die Stimme der Natur. 100 Jahre Pro Natura' (Kontrast Verlag), a bronze medal for 'Voids. A Retrospective' (JRP Ringier Kunstverlag) and an honorary appreciation for 'Jules Spinatsch' (KODOJI Press).
411 books were entered into this year's competition 'The most beautiful Swiss books', which the Swiss Federal Office of Culture conducts annually on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs. The five-member jury, chaired by graphic designer Cornel Windlin, examined each entry and conferred the title of most beautiful Swiss book of 2009 on a total of thirty books. The Federal Office of Culture thereby recognizes excellence in the field of book design and production, as well drawing attention to remarkable and contemporary books by Swiss designers, printers and publishers.
The jury takes into account each book's overall concept, graphic design and typography, and pays particular attention to innovation and originality. Further criteria include the quality of the printing and the cover, the binding and the materials used.
The most beautiful Swiss books were exhibited at the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich in June 2010, alongside the simultaneous publication of the comprehensive catalogue showcasing the competition. Currently, the awarded books are being presented at the Mudac in Lausanne (November 3, 2010 through February 12, 2011). As in the previous year, all the submitted books entered into the competition will be displayed alongside the award-winning titles.

Cornel Windlin, 1964, Küssnacht am Rigi, Präsident
Grafikfachklasse an der Schule für Gestaltung in Luzern, danach sechs Jahre in London, u.a. bei Neville Brody und ‘The Face'. Seit 1993 eigenes Studio in Zürich. Tätig für Museen und kulturelle Institutionen im In- und Ausland, und die Kunstzeitschrift ‘Tate Etc.' 2000-2002 war er verantwortlich für den Neuauftritt und das Gesamterscheinungsbild des Schauspielhauses Zürich unter der Direktion von Christoph Marthaler, und dann wieder seit 2009/2010. Mit Stephan Müller gründete er 1994 Lineto, ein Label, unter welchem eigene und andere Schriftentwürfe veröffentlicht werden. Seit 2004 zeichnet er für die Konzeption und visuelle Gestaltung der Vitra Home Collection verantwortlich.
Christoph Schifferli, 1950, Ascona
Studium der Sinologie, Wirtschaftsgeschichte und Informatik in Paris; promoviert 1980 über chinesische Wirtschaftsgeschichte. Ab 1981 Forschungsaufträge in Asien, sowie verschiedene Tätigkeiten im Verlags- und Technologiebereich; seit 1983 in den Bereichen Multimedia und Internet tätig, mit den Schwerpunkten Kunst, Kultur und Unterricht. Seit den 1980er-Jahren Sammler von Fotografie, Künstler- und Fotobüchern.
Lars Müller, 1955, Oslo (NO)
Gestalter und Verleger. Gründete 1982 ein Atelier für visuelle Kommunikation in Baden (Integral Lars Müller) und ist seit 1996 Partner von Integral Concept, einer internationalen Verbindung für transdisziplinäre Kompetenz. Seit 1985 regelmässige Lehrtätigkeit, aktuell an der Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Seit 1983 verlegerische Tätigkeit mit internationaler Ausrichtung in den Bereichen Architektur, Design, Kunst, Fotografie, Gesellschaft. Lars Müller ist Mitglied der Alliance Graphique Internationale.
Paul Neale, 1966, Ashby-de-la-Zouch (UK)
Grafikstudium an der Saint Martins School of Art und an der Central School of Art and Design 1985-1988 sowie am Royal College of Art, 1988-1990. Lehrtätigkeit in Typografie und Design am Central Saint Martins, 1991-1997. Zusammen mit Andrew Stevens und Nigel Robinson gründete er 1990 das Designstudio Graphic Thought Facility.
Linda van Deursen, 1961, Amsterdam (NL)
Grafikstudium an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie. 1986 Beginn der Zusammenarbeit mit Armand Mevis. Mevis & van Deursen arbeiten für Kunden aus dem Kulturbereich und zeichnen verantwortlich für die neue visuelle Identität des Museums Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, für das Corporate Design von Viktor & Rolf sowie für zahlreiche Bücher im Bereich von Kunst, Architektur und Design. Leiterin des Graphic Design Department an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie und tätig als Gastdozentin an der School of Art der Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.
