Gianfranco Helbling

(b. 1968) has been Director of the Teatro Sociale in Bellinzona since 2011 and established a new summer theatre festival entitled Territori, which was held there for the first time in 2013. He obtained a doctor-ate in law with a thesis on the human rights of Muslim women in Western countries, and is licensed to practise as an attorney. As a journalist, he began writing theatre and film reviews in 1994 and also ed-ited the Unia trade union’s magazine Area in Lugano. He is a member of the cultural committee for the Canton of Ticino and head of the theatre and dance subcommittee, as well as a member of the jury for the Hans Reinhart Ring. His previous activities as a jury and committee member have included the Swiss artists’ and theatre organisers’ association (ktv) artists’ exchange in Thun and the children and young people’s theatre festival SPOT.
