Mobile fairy-tale circus

Nominated for the Schweizer Kleinkunstpreis 2019

Nicole & Martin are Nicole Gubler Schranz, who was born in Geneva in 1971, and Martin Gubler, born in Liestal in 1970. They met at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri, where they trained in theatre and artistic research between 1993 and 1996. Before setting up their own ensemble in 1999 they spent two years touring in Europe and South Korea with Compagnia Dimitri. The idea behind their work is to create a new popular theatre that envisions the stage as a place for experiences and encounters for everyone, regardless of age, background or circumstances. Their productions, which are aimed at audiences aged six and over, are based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. They have received accolades including the culture promotion award from the Canton of Basel-Landschaft in 2002, the Tap Water Award and the Sell-Out Show logo from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2006, and the 1st Swiss Fairy-Tale Award in 2014.

Just like their historical forebears in the travelling theatre they journey to where their audiences are, spending roughly eight months of the year on the road around Europe with their own tent and wooden circus vehicles. Over a 19-year period they have performed 2,617 times at 513 venues in 12 different countries. The titles of their plays mirror the Grimm fairy tales from which they are derived: “Der Fischer und seine Frau” (The Fisherman and his Wife, 1999), “Hänsel & Gretel” (2001), “Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten” (The Bremen Town Musicians, 2004), “Das Mädchen ohne Hände” (The Girl Without Hands, 2011), “Eisenhans” (Iron John, 2016). The multi-talented duo present their stories in eight languages, using a wide range of performance techniques drawn from theatre, music, acrobatics, juggling, dance and improvisation. Nicole & Martin create theatre in which a wide range of dramatic arts come together in a highly expressive mobile fairy-tale circus.
