Pauline Julier. And So On, a Single Universe

Pauline Julier. And So On, a Single Universe

The expressive design of this landscape-format exhibition catalogue creates a unique visual world to embed Pauline Julier’s video works that traverse time and space. The use of paper with one side in fluorescent shades of yellow, orange or red creates a structure with alternating coloured and white double pages, allowing images documenting seven of Julier’s works (on the coloured double pages) to be interwoven with four long texts (on the white double pages). Building on this structure, novel design decisions are then taken at various points. For example, the selection criteria for the images and layout are completely different for each video work. Although the layout for the bilingual text is consistent, with English in a single column on the right and German in a wider column on the left, in some chapters the font changes to a monospace variant. A lengthy middle section with a different design features single-page stills, with some of the pages folding out to recreate a triptych installation of three 16mm films. Throughout the book, the landscape format reinforces the cinematographic effect, while the dynamism of the text titles, standing alone on a double page with font size varying from word to word or line to line, evoke film title sequences. Despite the plethora of design elements, every decision was precise. The artist has found in the book designer an equal partner in her ingenious play on fiction and documentation.
