100 Jahre Zoff

100 Jahre Zoff

This hefty, very flexible large-format publication marking the 100th anniversary of the Zurich student newspaper ZS is a richly filled book that functions on an emotional level. Its judicious design and outstanding printing on fine paper invite the reader to linger over the pages. The softcover is protected by a dust jacket in the form of a folded poster showing four greatly enlarged excerpts from the newspaper each tinged in a different colour. The first section of the book contains two dozen texts by former employees in an asymmetrical single-column layout with a serif typeface and occasional illustrations in the margin. The second part, which is on thinner paper, is entirely filled with image details and full images. These are mainly full bleed, often enlarged and always absent of commentary. The list of illustrations that follows reveals that these are grouped into five categories – excerpts, laidout pages, caricatures, advertisements and covers – within which they are ordered chronologically. Despite the systematic approach, the skilful selection and arrangement of individual elements provide a striking illustration that spectacular extracts and juxtapositions can be created from material that is not, in itself, attractive.
