Jury report

Kistler’s project takes the form of a textile installation and two photobooks, opposing family archive images from Indonesia, historically affected by recurring flooding due to infrastructural issues and neglect, with images of the River Rhine, from its source in Switzerland up to its delta in the Netherlands. In the project, erosion becomes a metaphor for impermanence and displacement, for both geographical and cultural flow, for relocation and adaptation, and for constant readjustment to an ever-changing environment. The jury was impressed by the potential of this project to serve both as an exploration and an expansion of the photographic medium as well as a reflection on the role of images in preserving and transmitting memory.
