The jury chose to recognise L’habit comme réceptacle by Josiane Martinho for her work as a costume and fashion designer and stylist. Martinho takes both existing garments and her own designs and stretches, tears or cuts them, turns them inside out or embellishes them, even dressing furniture, plants or flat surfaces with them rather than people. Her work in the period from 2018 to 2024 expresses a relationship with clothing and textiles that has freed itself from all sense of norm or function. Her creations may be seen as textile readymades. Martinho’s humour and playful radicalism are engaging, focussing the poetic potential of textiles and clothes to embellish objects and surfaces as well as human bodies. Often working with found and borrowed items, she breaks down the mechanisms and dynamics that normally drive every new narrative and collection in the fashion industry.
