Competition

The Federal Design Commission selected 24 works /projects by 33 young talents. The fashion/textile design and photography categories were strongly represented this year, six prizes being awarded in each category. Five prizes were awarded in the graphic design category, and two distinctions were awarded in the industrial and product design category. Exceptionally the strong presence in the field of scenography garnered three prizes and a prize was awarded for the first time in the design business category. This year, a designer was also selected in the ceramics category. In this year's competition, 266 designers submitted their dossiers. The competition prizes consist either of a cash sum of CHF 25,000, internships with renowned studios or offices, or studio residencies in New York. The award winners decide on the form of their prize.

At a joint exhibition, both the award-winning works of young designers as well as the works of renowned designers who received the Grand Prix Design will be shown at the mudac (Musée de design et d'arts appliqués contemporains) in Lausanne. We were fortunate to get Stephane Barbier Bouvet for the exhibition architecture. He has succeeded in uniting the various exhibits from different areas of design. His convincing concept divides the exhibition into two equal spheres: in one part, the winning objects are presented for what they are and without any further explanation. The rooms are left as empty as possible and where constructions are needed, existing structures of the museum are used.

The second area is situated in the middle of the exhibition, the so-called 'Education Room'. Here every page of this catalogue is displayed on the walls in the form of posters, thereby making available additional information on the prize-winning objects. Over and above the catalogue, additional items, videos and texts are shown to facilitate an understanding of the works selected for the award.
