Seeking beauty
Putting beauty into words or even defining it is a challenge. The graphic designer Florence Tétier sets herself this task for her diploma work 'Falabella, un récit sur la beauté' at the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne. Her work is research that approaches the phenomenon of beauty in a very personal and intimate way, and tries to avoid the usual clichés. It developed from conversations with a friend whom she asked to give his views on the concept of beauty in a letter. He was supposed to make a statement in a childlike way about what he personally finds beautiful and what he doesn't. This letter became the guideline for the present magazine. She derives the chapters from it, takes up the main passages again and also answers him with a letter. She underpins her statements with illustrations she designs herself or with photographs she has taken from the family album or staged herself. This develops into a cosmos of personal memories drawing on childhood and youth in particular and finding its counterpart in illustrations that are comprehensible only to the designer herself in terms of their significance for the theme of beauty. When flicking through the book, viewers are confronted with an abundance of very varied 'memory images' that have something very touching about them and suggest a personal analysis, far removed from any clichés about beauty. But this intimate work is not accessible to everyone – one variation would be to say 'beauty lies in the eye of the beholder'.
