A fashion collection with six outfits, six booklets, two dolls

Jury report

Inspired by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara and his creature that fluctuates between child-like cuteness and invidious monstrosity, Valerie Jantz uses the six outfits of her diploma project ‘just not big enough' as a means of seduction into another world, a world of capricious dimensions, shifted proportions and ambivalent feelings. The clear colours and firmness of the thick industrial felt, the large sewn padded buttons and collars, and the over-sized stitches of the quadruply crocheted wool make these outfits look more like objects than items of clothing. The bodies of the women wearing them, ‘packed' into these pieces, change proportions, become immobile in a doll-like manner and suddenly appear to be uniquely fragile. With consistent clarity and a convincing presence, Valerie Jantz implements her idea and presents a collection, which is impressive in the autonomy of the implementation of the basic idea, an idea with a great ability to irritate.
