Three series of five colour photographies each

Photography

Jury report

The core of this multi-part photographic work is a series of five large-size images that lead one's gaze into the inside of items of clothing. Inflated by a strong air jet and illuminated by photoflash, the trousers, shirt, overall and quilted jacket now appear as textile cave systems. Further series of colour photographs show unfamiliar, even dreamlike situations. In one instance, groups of people laugh, sit or sleep in their living room at night, always in the presence of a television, which appears to be observing them from an image of concentric circles. Or people float in darkened rooms at night as if they were completely liberated by the weightlessness. In an extremely idiosyncratic manner, Tarik Hayward's photographs lead us into unfamiliar spaces. They tell stories, but only in a rudimentary and encoded manner, which means that the viewers' imagination is constantly challenged. In the language of a dreamlike realism, the photographer creates worlds in which human beings are guests, but appear to accept this as a dreamlike experience.
