Jury report

The multi-part diploma project ‘Tools - Werkzeug für die Küche' (tools for the kitchen) shows Stefan Stauffacher to be a person who often spends time in the kitchen paying great attention to and enjoying manual work. Thanks to a clever selection of material, some objects obtain a strikingly sensual character. Thus, for example, the one-piece citrus press and the porcelain mortar fit perfectly into the palm of the hand and are fascinating in their pleasant surface feel. Stefan Stauffacher's innovations can be found in small things, and sensible details facilitate use. The pan holder, for example, made of heat-resistant silicone no longer slips from one's hand thanks to a carefully positioned burl, while the vertically angled fittings on the pan that are sealed all round allow the cooking water to be drained off easily. However, the Jury was not always equally convinced by the connection of two objects, in particular in aesthetic terms. The precise context and the obvious grappling with basic design issues, on the other hand, which indicate careful research and an exact analysis of sequences of movement, hand gestures and materials, are impressive.
