Jury report

The more one immerses oneself in Sandrine Pelletier's diploma project ‘Wild boys', the more confusing it is. What at a first glance looks like produced interiors from the 19th century, turns out under further scrutiny and decoding of the ornamental elements to be a view into a diametrically opposed world. The basic patterns of the cushion covers, crocheted tablecloths and tapestries are inspired by the world of backyard wrestlers. This contrast is at its clearest in the embroidered and sewn portraits in yellowed pastel tones of these people who feel at home in the frequently brutal world of the backyards and not amidst the fine fabrics processed here. With formal consistency, a sample book where the individual objects are offered for dispatch with indications of delivery times and care instructions complements the presentation. The unprejudiced debate that Sandrine Pelletier uses boldly to interweave two opposing worlds and to ‘sew together' their status symbols with rough stitches is impressive because the result is a complexly perfidious, fascinatingly powerful work.
