Jury report

The works submitted by freelance illustrator Gregory Gilbert-Lodge are mainly commissions for national and international editorial customers. His illustrations appear weekly in various magazines and are thus known to a large general public. Precisely selected photographs often serve as (optical) bearers of the illustrations with their precise two-tone cuts, which, applied to these ‘realities' like in a collage, appear to charge themselves completely in front of the different backgrounds. With small, but highly symbolic and situation-related details in the printed ‘images', Gregory Gilbert-Lodge subtly guides the viewers' reading, and inspires associations without ever being clumsy. The impressive independence of these illustrations is based on the harmonious equilibrium between an objectively precise representation and a, often only recognisable as such at a second glance, free, almost suggestive interpretation of the specified topic. This is skilful exploitation of the limited scope between the ideas of customers, the exact representation and personal expression.
