Jury report

In the form of a book, photographer Flurina Rothenberger enables us to take a trip into the world of exiled West Africans in Zurich with her diploma project ‘I don't know where I'm going but I'm on the way'. The central topics of this extremely personal work consist of the quest for the human drive to create a piece of one's personal home in a foreign place and to find an adequate expression for the emotional disruption that living in two cultures brings with it. To represent the individual worlds, Flurina Rothenberger uses other media in addition to photography. In an extremely balanced design, she combines excerpts from the journals of those portrayed, other notes, transcripts of everyday conversations, collected image material from private photo albums, copies from West African lifestyle magazines, photographs and drawings with the actual portrait photographs. Thus, an honest and respectful reportage is created, a finely interwoven collection of individual stories that have been carefully bound into this idiosyncratically designed book.
