Jury report

The diploma project, ‘Self-Workshopping', of industrial designer Damien Regamey comprises the most varied everyday objects. In a self-set period of time of two weeks for each object (from the idea to the implementation of the prototypes), the designer's aim was not to invent new things, but to add an additional, more useful dimension to these objects, often through the fusion of two objects. Thus, for example, door mat and corridor carpet, cables and two-way adaptors, clothes hooks and the screws needed to attach these items become one and enter into logical connections, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Other things, such as the nail heads shaped like animal silhouettes or the relief pattern of the tablemat that becomes darker through contact with a hot pan, simply encourage frequent use in everyday life. This work is characterised by the designer's light-hearted and strikingly conceptual approach. Although the development and implementation of the prototypes in such a brief period of time in part prevented mature solutions, however, it is proof of great technical and design skill.
