Rhona Mühlebach. Obstacles for Cows
The young Swiss video artist Rhona Mühlebach presents eight works within a slim, large-format softcover book that uses text and musical notation in an unconventional take on the ’representation’ of film. The volume resembles a music book, and each of the eight video works is represented by a multi-page typographical arrangement of dialogue and music. The bold cover design features a beige pattern reminiscent of artificial leather and a blue embossed title; the same combination appears inside on the title pages of the eight chapters. These title pages also feature a running essay printed in black, in a narrow column and large font, always on either the left-hand or right-hand edge of the page. Each of the eight chapters has one loose small-format sheet with a greentinged video still inserted into it. The various components playfully reference some traditional tropes of book design and create an attractive blend of content and materials that invite the reader to linger over the pages while also delivering a tactile experience.
