Les déserteuses
The red cover, serif typeface and occasional ornaments of this wonderfully printed softcover create a slightly nostalgic feel, which chimes very well with the content. The text discusses the work of certain women in the Fluxus movement, such as Nye Ffarrabas, who cut their careers short in the late 1960s. It is divided into eight chapters, each with a very similar design, made up of different text extracts including passages personally addressed to Ffarrabas in the form of letters, extensive quotations, art-historical notes and fictional explorations that draw comparisons to the contemporary art scene. The non-linear narrative approach is subtly and wittily conveyed via a slightly smaller loose page, which pretends to correct a printing error and thereby provides additional variety to the story. The design has a warm and affectionate impact. It is a very human artist’s book that also functions well as an object.
