500 Jahre Zürcher Reformation. Das Jubiläumsbuch
The Copper Thread
The design of this medium-format brochure on Zurich’s Reformation commemorations deploys a dazzling variety of unconventional stylistic resources that reflect the diversity of the 18-month event series and subvert the aesthetic dichotomy of ‘beautiful’ and ‘ugly’. While the pictorial and textual documentation on the individual events is presented in a uniform two-column layout, it is interspersed with essay sections (on grey paper), full-bleed photo series (featuring subjects such as church interiors) and various graphic representations of the events and the history of the Reformed Church in Zurich. The use of two colours – black and copper – for the cover, texts, graphics and some of the photos lends a degree of continuity. A recurring ornament suggestive of a copper wire runs like the proverbial thread through the book. The various collage and rendering techniques employed for the graphic elements are especially striking. The black-and-copper cover with its singular ornament is among the best of the year.
