Zurich-based artist and professor Peter Radelfinger presents a book nearly 700 pages in length on the learning and working processes he has tried out with students over the decades. The design structures the content in such a way that the lengthy text and copious visual materials never appear overwhelming, instead offering an inviting and innovative example of the textbook genre. The four main chapters on ‘introducing', ‘designing', ‘commencing' and ‘performing' open with individual pages of thick paper that provide a direct point of entry. The various hierarchical levels of the sub-chapters are indicated by fonts of decreasing size. The alternating image-text layouts point up various levels of reference between the two media, with each image presented in a way that emphasises its importance and value. The reinforced detached-spine softcover makes this an impressive block that is very easy to open.
