The Playground Project

The Playground Project

An exhibition at the Kunsthalle Zürich examined designs, equipment and modular systems for children's playgrounds from the 1950s to 1980s. The medium-sized white hardcover catalogue combines a large amount of attractive pictorial material with informative texts on designers and scientists, making it appealing both to leaf through and to read in depth. The design draws on the playground theme by probing established restrictions and exploring new freedoms. The striking red cover font with individual bold letters returns inside the book as a title font, in a smaller size and black and white. Together with the narrow leading and large page numbers that alternate between two positions, it dominates the distinctive typographical appearance. The parallel texts in columns of different width - the German is uniformly wider than the English - create effects that are sometimes disconcerting but also surprising.
