Here and Where

In the abbey church of Bellelay, Julia Steiner presented a two-part, space-filling installation: behind the altar was a very tall, abstract black-and-white painting stretched on a wooden structure, while the choir area was occupied by a planar black sculpture. The catalogue presents the two parts of the work in multiple facets, from various viewpoints and distances, as if guiding the reader through the exhibition. The high-gloss cover with large flaps features full-bleed close-ups emphasising the material qualities of both painting and sculpture. A series of sometimes monumental exhibition views then zooms in on the sculpture. In a centre section on uncoated paper, a number of smaller photos placed in groups of four on a double page in a uniform layout document the progressive construction of the installation. The reader is then brought up close to the painting just as with the sculpture in the first part of the catalogue.
