Places of Production: Aluminium
The catalogue from the Kingdom of Bahrain for the Venice Architecture Biennale, which was given away in quantities at the event, documents the state's aluminium production. With two grey papers, numerous light-coloured and coarsely screened images by a duo of photographers, and various blank pages, it creates an impression of lightness that fits well with the lightness of aluminium. The structure and organisation are very well thought out. The front and rear covers are both printed with the same blue-black scene photo from a factory, but in the first instance the workers are blue and the premises black, while in the second the colours are reversed. This is a reference both to the changing interaction between human and machine - one of the book's key themes - and to the fact that the book can be read from both sides: in English from left to right and in Arabic from right to left. The two languages mostly appear separately (sometimes with images) on alternating double pages, but they meet in the middle in informational charts in two languages.
