Zeitungsfotos / Newspaper Photographs
Four hundred black-and-white newspaper photographs from the 1980s, which in 1990 –91 Thomas Ruff photographed without captions and enlarged, are presented very attractively in this thick, small-format volume. The minimal textual details in a standard type size and the generous white space ─ each double-page spread shows one photo ─ direct the reader’s attention entirely to the content and the small format creates a strong sense of closeness and intimacy. The photos are printed on a grey base which along with the glossy, slightly transparent paper gives them an additional charge. The paper is very thin and requires careful handling, which makes the book appear particularly valuable. Thanks to the softcover with an open spine, the volume can be opened optimally. The book gives the impression of being almost a fetish object, and this can be seen as an allusion to the fact that Ruff’s work addresses the fetishistic quality of mass-media images.
