Carl Andre

Poems

This catalogue of Carl Andre’s poems, produced in collaboration with the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen, is a good example of the way in which book design is capable of developing within the context of a publishing programme. Although the unusual, almost square format and certain design decisions were already present in earlier artists’ monographs published by the company ─ such as the volume on Pierrette Bloch that received an award in last year’s Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition ─ the new book does not look like a mere repetition. It approaches Andre’s material carefully and displays it to its best advantage. Despite the routine, every detail of the design is well considered and confident. The consistent arrangement of two or four illustrations of works on each double-page spread allows optimal integration of varying portrait and landscape formats. The quality of the reproduction is high. The design team works without irony here and does not shy away from elegance. The approach does not have an old-fashioned effect, however; instead, it could be described as a new and quite original classic style.
